Description: Program Introduction
Welcome to "Traumatic Brain Injury: The Journey Home." This program is designed to provide information about traumatic brain injury -- often called TBI -- including the causes, symptoms and diagnosis. Treatment, recovery and strategies for preventing future injuries to the brain are also covered. Because so many Americans are serving in areas where TBI has become a common injury, the information presented here will also focus on injuries suffered in combat situations. Finally, the relationship between TBI and posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is briefly explored.

It’s estimated that over one and a half million American civilians sustain a TBI and that more than 50,000 die each year as a result of brain injuries. Fortunately, the US Department of Defense and the Veteran’s Administration are making great advances in the diagnosis and treatment of brain injury. In this program we'll look at some of the causes of TBI along with ways to prevent injuries to both civilians and members of the military.

It’s important to remember that only your medical team can give you specific information about your condition. The information covered here is designed to help you better understand traumatic brain injury, and help you and your family work with your medical team.
